What if your period is late?

A missed period is the first sign of pregnancy. If a fertilized egg implants in the uterine wall, it will not be shed as a normal period. If you are sexually active, a missed period is a positive sign that you are pregnant.

The only way to know for sure if you are pregnant is to have a blood test or an ultrasound scan.

You can buy a home pregnancy test kit at any pharmacy to perform a urine test at home. Regardless of the result, it is wise to seek medical attention.

However, there are many reasons why many women have irregular menstrual cycles. These include: Stress, poor nutrition, medication related complications, excessive exercise, sudden weight loss or gain, medical conditions, hormonal imbalances, and the use of contraceptives.

If you think you are pregnant, or if you are concerned about changes to your menstrual cycle, see a doctor. You can get more information and advice from your local mid-wife, or Ministry of Health [MOH] office.
